Four Common Myths About Tree Trimming and Pruning

Tree trimming

When done properly, trimming and pruning maintain the look and health of your trees. There is some false information about tree pruning out there, though, and some of it is potentially detrimental to the health of your trees. We’ve taken the opportunity to separate fact from fiction by compiling a list of four myths about tree trimming and pruning. Read on to learn more.

Myth #1: Tree topping is an effective method.

This is a common misconception. Tree topping is a harmful practice, period. Not only does it weaken a tree’s structure, it causes wounds that make it susceptible to disease, pests, fungus, and decay. The tree also becomes more vulnerable to extreme weather conditions, sun damage, nutrient deficiency, and rarely grows back in a desirable shape. Long story short, topping results in an unattractive, unhealthy tree.

Myth #2: Trees don’t really need pruning.

To maintain their proper shape, trees do require regular pruning. By removing water sprouts and over-vigorous branch growth, you are guiding your tree’s growth and encouraging its healthy structure and form.

Myth #3: Never trim a tree in summer.

This age-old superstition has been proven false time and again. Summer trimming can actually help a tree’s health. By lopping off dead or dying branches, you’re making more nutrients available to the healthy limbs that can actually benefit. Summer is when water sprouts and suckers grow most vigorously, so this is also the best time to control their growth.

Myth #4: Improper timing is deadly.

Trimming your tree at the wrong time of year can be harmful, yes, but it rarely results in its death. When in doubt, check with a professional to help your tree heal or prevent pruning during the wrong season.
