For When You’re Stumped on Removing a Stump

tree stump removal

After a tree is cut down, most landscaping companies leave the stump unless removal is part of the initial quote. It’s easy enough to get rid of it yourself with the right stump grinding tools.

Stump Grinding Tools

Once left with a tree stump to remove, many homeowners go after the task with an ax, shovel, chainsaw, and whatever else they have around the shed that’s sharp. Before you try to dig the stump out, try grinding it down. It may take a trip to the hardware store for equipment rental, but it will save you a lot of time and energy.

Renting a stump grinder for a day is an excellent choice, especially if you have multiple stumps to remove. The cost can even be split between neighbors if they’re in need as well. Make sure you have a vehicle or trailer big enough to transport the grinder. If not, the rental company may be able to deliver. If you’ve never used this machinery before, make sure you know how before you leave the store. Also, pick up some goggles and earplugs for protection if you don’t have them already.

Removing a Stump with a Grinder

Before you start grinding, clear any rocks and debris from the area around the stump. Using a chainsaw, trim the stump as close as you can to the ground. This makes grinding easier. Now you can fire up the machine.

  1. Raise the grinder wheel a few inches above the stump.
  2. Position the wheel directly over the stump’s front edge.
  3. Start the wheel spinning and slowly lower it about three inches into the stump.
  4. Slowly swing the wheel from side to side to grind the wood down and out.
  5. When you’ve reached at least four inches down, raise the wheel, move the machine forward a few inches, and repeat the process.

While operating, stand at the control panel at the back of the machine, far away from the cutting wheel. Once you’re finished, rake up the wood chips and fill the new hole with topsoil. You may also want to spread an even layer of grass seed to patch the bare spot. Water the area and cover with a thick layer of mulch.

Professional Stump Grinding

If you only have one stump that needs removing, it may be more efficient to hire a landscaping company to get the job done quickly and easily. They usually charge by the diameter of the tree.
