More Than Just Smelling Roses

They say you should take time to stop and smell the roses, but what about pausing to appreciate the plants? Plants add so much to our lives, whether they’re indoors or out. Here are some reasons for plant appreciation.

Benefits of Plants

In science class, we learn plants are vital to all living things. They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. In addition to providing the very thing we need to breathe, plants are pretty, some are edible, and others become a shelter for animals.

Other benefits include:

  • Enhancing the look of property (when pruned properly)
  • Privacy screens
  • Absorbing sound
  • Temperature control
  • Improving air quality
  • Medicinal properties
  • Filtering pollutants

And with these health-related reasons, it’s no wonder plants are natural mood boosters.

Indoor & Outdoor Plant Appreciation

Tending an indoor or outdoor garden can work wonders for any environment. Whether you’re planting flowers, vegetables, or indoor varieties, do yourself and the plant a favor by choosing the right area where your plant can get the right amount of sun, shade, water, and nutrients. Every plant is different, so plan accordingly.

For outdoor plants, planting varieties native to the area encourages easier growth since they’re already accustomed to the climate. Some varieties—including certain weeds—also provide pollinators with what they need to thrive.

Even though indoor plants tend to be more adaptable to the environment and typically need less maintenance, they shouldn’t be ignored. They still require a certain amount of light and watering, but they can certainly perk up decor from some pretty pots.

Before you continue with the rest of your day or evening, take a moment to look around, appreciate the plants indoors, step outside to thank the ones in your garden, and add another mood booster to the family.
