What to do Once the Tree is Down

There’s a lot to consider when planning to remove a tree. But what happens once the tree is removed? It’s often a question that gets overlooked. Here’s how to prepare for post tree removal.

Post Tree Removal Considerations

Once you’ve decided a tree needs to be removed, planning begins to determine when it should come down and how to protect the surrounding area. Another important consideration is what should happen once the tree is removed. Other than cleaning up branches and debris, any process involved after tree removal is usually not included in the overall quote. These processes include:

  • Log Splitting. Cut the trunk down to more manageable pieces for transport, burning, crafts, or other projects.
  • Stump Grinding. Remove the stump and root system to level the area for easier planting and landscaping design. You can use the wood chips from grinding as mulch or compost.
  • Soil Testing. Assess the soil for compaction and nutrient content and amend it with topsoil, organic matter, or fertilizer to improve plant health.
  • Replanting. Choose a native tree species that will thrive in the specific location.

If you want the tree removal company to help with any of these activities you need to mention it during the initial quoting process. Some of these tasks require different tools and expertise and are often quoted separately.

Regrowth in the Area

After tree removal, watch for signs of the plant reseeding in other areas of your lawn, and remove the seedlings unless you want the same tree to regrow. Maintain the health of the remaining plants by continuing to prune, water, and fertilize when necessary. If the tree you removed was impacted by disease, keep a close eye on any surviving trees and consult an arborist for treatment options.
