Tree pruning is an important part of plant care. The right cuts at the right time can help shape your tree or shrub to yield more fruit, flowers, and beautiful years of life. But before you start cutting, there are several tree pruning considerations to make. These could mean the difference between promoting healthy growth or inviting future problems.
Tree Pruning Considerations
Before pruning a tree, consider the season, the plant’s current condition, and what you want for the plant. These factors inform if it’s the right time to prune. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Is the tree healthy? Look for signs of disease, damage, and pest infestations. These issues should be confirmed before pruning and addressed while making cuts.
- Is it the right time of year? While it’s never too early or late to remove broken branches, the best time to prune a tree is during the dormant season—right before it starts actively growing again—to promote healing and help minimize the risk of disease.
- How’s the structure? Your tree has a natural shape, but you can help strengthen its structure by removing any crisscrossing branches.
- What’s its purpose? Growing an ornamental plant requires different pruning techniques than shade trees. You can alter the size and shape depending on what type of plant you have.
- Has it bloomed yet? Pruning a plant before it blooms runs the risk of cutting off new buds. Wait until after the flowers fade.
- Do I have the right tools? Pruning a large branch in a tall tree requires a different tool than shaping a low shrub. Determine whether you need hand pruners for close, thin branches or a pole saw for higher, thicker branches. Make sure the blades are clean and sharp and you know how to properly use the tool.
- Is it safe? If the branches are too high to reach or the plant is close to utility lines, consult a certified arborist for help.
- Where do I cut? Make cuts at an angle just above the branch collar to avoid creating a stub that won’t heal properly.
- What’s the weather like? Take it easy on yourself and your plant by pruning on a cool, dry day.
After you’ve considered your plant needs and your desired results, you’ll be better informed on whether it’s the best time to prune. Don’t be afraid to get a second opinion. Contact Elite Tree Care for a consultation on whether your specific plant needs pruning and how and when to do it properly.
