Essential Tree Care Tips for Winter

This is the time of year when everyone gets their holiday wish list together. So, why not your trees? Here’s what they’re hoping for this season.

Holiday Wish List for Trees

  1. Water. Before the ground freezes, water deeply to help keep dormant trees hydrated.
  2. Mulch. Tuck the tree roots in for a long winter’s nap by applying a few inches of wood chips or leaves around the base of the trunk. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk in a donut shape to prevent rot while helping to insulate roots and retain moisture.
  3. Proper Pruning. Remove dead, diseased, or broken branches and help to reshape the tree while it’s dormant so you can easily see its structure.
  4. Protection. Manage snow and ice by gently brushing any heavy layer upward to help prevent breakage.
  5. Natural Products. Be mindful if using harsh de-icers like rock salt and keep them away from trees. Use more natural products with calcium or potassium to help decrease damage.
  6. Shields. Young, vulnerable trees could benefit from specialized guards to help prevent deer and rodents from chewing bark. Wrap delicate evergreens with burlap or build a small structure around them to help block windburn and heavy snow.

These gifts help prevent harsh winter weather from burning, breaking, or dehydrating your plants. By checking off your tree’s holiday wish list, you’ll also be mitigating animal damage and structural issues to help ensure a healthy start for your tree in the spring.
